This week’s newsletter is all about the growing sensation of our time, the supplement for television and music, every twenty-something’s favorite pastime: podcasts. When it comes to podcasts, it is very important to do your research and find the best ones for you and your auditory needs. Audio services are the future, whether it is podcasts or audio books. Like finding a book in a bookstore, finding what you are looking for can be a challenge. There are seemingly an infinite number of books to choose from. The same goes for podcasts. That is why I am here to help. I always pick podcasts, books, and movies that are recommended to me by friends. It is the best way to get you started when you do not know what to look for. So, along with my list, ask your friends and family what they listen to, as those are always great places to start. Let us jump right into the list!
1. Bill Gates and Rashida Jones Ask Big Questions (Lifestyle)
This first podcast is great and where I suggest everyone start if they are just looking for an easy-to-listen-to podcast covering a wide range of topics. This podcast is hosted by not only one of the smartest people in the world, Bill Gates, but he is accompanied by an amazing actress, entrepreneur, and very likeable person, Rashida Jones. These two are great to listen to as they bring lots of valuable and diverse insight to the table. They also do not shy away from the tough questions facing our world. They discuss everything in detail with great arguments for all viewpoints, so no matter your view, this podcast is simply a great listen. This is a fairly new podcast, so you can easily catch up on all the episodes! I mean come on, who doesn’t love Rashida?
2. The Joe Rogan Experience (Lifestyle)
This podcast is a huge fan favorite because Joe Rogan encourages genuine, honest conversation with his guests and welcomes their knowledge in their areas of expertise. The structure of this podcast is that, well, it doesn’t have a lot of structure. Rogan hosts celebrities, politicians, scientists, psychologists, authors – pretty much anyone worth talking to. It does not matter their age, race, gender, or opinions, Rogan will ask the hard-hitting questions that we are all wondering. They talk, laugh, and argue about whatever comes up in the conversation. He has episodes for everyone! You can also check out highlights of his episodes on YouTube to get a good feel for what this podcast is all about and the type of people he has on the podcast. I have yet to meet a person who does not like The Joe Rogan Experience.
3. Ten Percent Happier with Dan Harris (Health)
Mental health is arguably the number one issue facing youth today. This statement was even true before the never-ending tragedies of 2020 happened. This is large in part because mental health is not openly discussed as much as it should be. This podcast starts the conversation. Helping people develop strategies and skills to become happier is the goal of this podcast. Even if you do not consider yourself a person struggling with mental health, I recommend giving these episodes a listen because it is important to take care of yourself. If this podcast does not float your boat, don’t you worry, there are seven more to try!
4. Jocko Podcast (Health)
This is for the more gritty and straightforward health podcast pursuer. Jocko is an ex-Navy Seal, and you will pick up on what that means really quickly. Health and wellness mean a lot to him and he will give it to you straight. Nowadays people try to come up with crazy workouts and new techniques for insane health. Jocko, however, breaks it down for the average Joe and gives you very easy and sustainable tips for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Once you listen to an episode, you will see what I mean. He also gives you the insane motivation to get up and run a 5k right then and there. But, I don’t recommend that.
5. Motley Fool Money (Finance)
Now, this podcast is one of my all-time favorites and it is all about my favorite topic – investing in the stock market. If you need to learn more about how to make your money work for you, but you don’t understand any of the jargon, this is the podcast for you. The three main guys go into detail about the economic markets as well as explore recent news stories of specific stocks. I have built my own personal portfolio based on the information given in this podcast. If you are interested in knowing more about my portfolio, let me know in the comments section! This podcast is connected to a larger company called the Motley Fool. They specialize in financial journalism in Layman’s Terms for everyone to understand. If you are just getting started investing and learning more about your money, I suggest listening to this podcast.
6. The Pomp Podcast (Technology/Finance)
Pomp, as Anthony Pompliano is referred to, is an entrepreneur and investor. He has worked at all the big tech companies and has helped create other companies as well. This man is very intertwined in the tech and finances world. His podcast designed to explain to people who are not in the tech world, what is going on in the tech world. All you and I see are headlines that either don’t make any sense or are completely twisted by the media. Pomp spends his time on the podcast educating his listeners on what that headline means, and what we need to be doing about it to stay ahead. If you are looking for a great educational podcast on technology and our overall financial system, I would recommend giving this a listen.
7. Robinhood Snacks (Finance)
This is my third and final financial podcast recommendation. I love financial podcasts and I think it is so important to educate yourself on this subject. The structure of this podcast is sort of like Motley Fool Money, but it is for the people who know even less about the stock market. If you use the trading platform, Robinhood, then you will see how this is connected to this company. When you have a spare 15-20 minutes, listen to their quick weekly recaps on the economy and stock markets to make sure you feel prepared that your funds are allocated in the best position in your portfolio.
8. We Study Billionaires (Business)
Have you ever wondered how people like Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and even people like Kim Kardashian, achieved such unimaginable wealth? Well, this podcast has the answer. This podcast is hosted by two guys that do deep research on some of the wealthiest people in the world, and then tell you exactly how they got there. You might think, “Well yeah, Kim made that one video and then had a million dollars.” No. The detail these podcast hosts go into about how people were able to monetize their ideas would blow your mind. The formula is not: build a company = billions of dollars. The podcast describes in excruciating detail the personality billionaires have to have, the life choices they have to make, and the number one most important: their ability to monetize both of the previous aspects. They cover it all and give you a better look into how you can use these strategies that have worked for others, in your own life. Just to give you a sneak preview, the most important thing these billionaires did, was work hard and adapt to every curveball life threw at them.
9. 30 Minutes to President’s Club (Business)
My next business podcast suggestion also doubles as a lifestyle podcast. This podcast teaches us all about the skill everyone needs (in my opinion, of course) – sales. Yes, you read that correctly. In this podcast the two hosts interview top sales professionals at various companies to educate their listeners on the science and the art of sales. “Why is he putting this on the list?” you might ask. Well, virtually every job you will ever have will include some sort of sales. Hear me out, you are either selling a product, your personality, your business to a potential client, your time, etc. In life, most interactions can be summed up as a sales meeting. Something gets discussed and then traded or executed. Therefore, listening to this podcast is crucial because these hosts give you such powerful tools to help you stay in the driver’s seat and get the most out of each interaction in your life. I do not work in sales, but I take what their guests are saying and use it in my everyday life, just as they say to do. This is a little curve ball in my list, but I think the knowledge and skill is incredibly valuable. Once you realize everything you do is sales, you will be able to start being more mindful of your actions and reactions.
10. The Bill Simmons Podcast (Sports)
We have finally reached the last podcast on my list. In addition to stocks, I love sports. This is more of a relaxing podcast choice for the die-hard sports fan. I love watching, playing, and listening to sports. You know who else does to? Bill Simmons. I have never known a person who knows more about a subject than this man. The way he talks about sports is fascinating and addictive. He is not on SportsCenter just talking headlines. He breaks down sports to the numbers and the stats. You know, the things that matter. I know I have some sports fan subscribers in this newsletter, so take some time and check him out, you will not regret it!
Bonus: By Golly, It’s Sadie and Molly
Oh, would you look at that! I put in a bonus podcast! This podcast is very special to me because the host is none other than my cousin Sadie. She started this podcast with her friend Molly, and it is terrific! Even with balancing high school, extracurricular activities, and COVID-19, Sadie and Molly have created such a fun podcast. If you are looking for a lighthearted, random topics podcast, I have found the one for you. It is live on Apple/Spotify Podcasts, so give it a listen, subscribe, and leave a great review!
